December 15th

Jake

It was after four in the morning that they were finally let go. Jake wasn’t, it had to be said, very impressed with the police. They hadn’t even been able to do their job, hadn’t been able to catch a crazed fanboy and his daughter. They’d gotten them pretty much through a lucky break.

At least Jake had stopped shaking. Though he knew that had a lot more to do with having Xavier nearby than anything else. His insides, though, were still quivering. There had been a gun.

Of course, the attempt to kill him had been there before. The brake lines to his car had been cut, after all. But somehow, seeing the gun had seemed so much more real and vivid. Which was ridiculous. Dead was dead, and a car careening out of control could kill him just as surely as a bullet could.

Thank God for Xavier.

“If it weren't for you, I would have gone to help her,” Jake admitted, as they were finally allowed to leave the police station. He stopped right outside of it, turning to face Xavier. He couldn’t let this go even one more minute. He would force the words out.

“Yeah,” Xavier said softly, his eyes sparkling like sapphires as he gazed down at Jake. “I almost did, too. It’s beyond fucked up that someone would actually use their kid that way.”

Jake nodded his agreement. Who would hand their child, who couldn’t be more than sixteen, a gun, and then tell them to go do their best to kill someone? Who would attempt to turn their child into a murderer? It was utterly insane.

“Thank you,” Jake spoke. He kept it simple because it was just easier that way. “Thank you for saving my life.”

“It’s my job,” Xavier said, with a wry little twist of his lips. Jake frowned, his eyes studying that handsome face, and then he shook his head.

“I know it is, but you would have done it anyway. Wouldn’t you?” Jake knew that Xavier had consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty, and he could only think of one reason that would happen.

He remembered a night suddenly. A night where he’d drifted off to sleep after telling Xavier that he loved him. He had assumed he had been sleeping already when he heard Xavier say the same thing back, but he was no longer so sure about that.

Xavier was silent, and Jake reached out, taking Xavier’s hand in his. He linked their fingers together and gazed up at him.

“You love me,” Jake insisted, because what else could it be? Something, call it instinct, was telling him he was right, and Xavier looked at him steadily, and then sighed softly, but didn’t deny it.

“It would be a really bad idea to fall in love with someone I work for,” Xavier avoided Jake’s eyes, and Jake realized that his big, strong, tough protector was actually afraid. Terrified, even, while Jake suddenly felt much calmer and more certain than he ever had about anything in his life.
